Puppy Development

Our puppy development program is like pre-school for puppies; all fun and a little structure. During puppy development, pups are introduced to birds, different kinds of cover, gun fire, and basic obedience. We aim to just let the puppies be puppies and explore their world, part of this is socialization. Pups are socialized to different dogs, different people and of course birds! Puppy development is not training, it is to develop the pups prey drive and prepare them for their futures as bird dogs.

Ideally puppy development would occur when the puppy is 8-20 weeks old.

The puppy development program is 2-4 weeks long and is $250 per week.

Bird dog training

Formal training should occur after puppy development. Our objectives in formal training are to teach the dog to go with us in the field or woods, come to us when asked, and stop to honor other dogs and stop when asked. Along with these three things, the dogs get multiple opportunities each week to find birds, socialize with other dogs and explore different covers.

We split formal upland training into three phases:

Foundation- during the foundation phase, we build the foundation for all other training. We will build a point of contact for come to us and stop. By the end of the foundation phase, the dog will understand to go with us, come to us and stop.

Intermediate- during the intermediate phase we perfect the foundation and continue to develop the bird dog. By the end of the intermediate training, the dog will be honoring other dogs and be ready to run on wild birds.

Phase three is Wild Bird Camp. Click here to find out more about the final phase on our Hunt page.

Formal Training can begin at 6 months and each phase lasts on average 6 weeks and is $250 per week.

Obedience training

Does your dog need a touch up on their manners? Do they have that one behavior that rubs you the wrong way? Do they take you for a walk instead of you taking them for a walk? Or, are you just looking for a good citizen in the house? Obedience training can begin at 12 weeks and generally lasts between 4 and 12 weeks and is $250 per week.

We are blessed to live and train in Central Wisconsin where we have 12,700 acres of prairie in our backyard and beautiful woods a short drive away. We live for our springs and late summers in the prairie and our autumns in the woods.

WILD BIRD CAMP

On average, we spend 45 days between August 1st and the middle of September training dogs on Prairie Chickens. This gives the dogs a hunting season, before the fall season begins. In the prairie, dogs get ample opportunities to find birds, honor other dogs, get experience going with the hunters and learn to work the cover.

Wild Bird Camp is open to any dog who has a foundation level training. Many dogs return for a couple weeks every summer to get a chance to get back into shape and find birds before hunting season begins.

HUNTING TRIPS

On occasion we take trips to hunt in other parts of the country. We always welcome back dogs that have gone through our training program. We look at it as a hunting vacation for your dog.
